Richard Ellis Group, 2018

Fabulous day today, Richard. We always learn such a lot when we’re out with you but today was exceptional.

Will we be able to pick up part 2 on clearing the battlefields on another occasion?  It would have been good to do that today but time moves on so fast on days like this when we are learning such a lot.

The girls enjoyed it too, which was really why we thought this would be a good topic to cover.

All the best and thanks again.

Richard, Richard, Dave, Pete, Sylvia, Caroline, Ann and Sue

Richard,

Many thanks for your tour, on Tuesday. To focus on the logistics of dealing with casualties was fascinating and something I found particularly interesting.

You managed to convey the huge scale of the battle and the human consequences for those who “fell”.

I know that Sue, Sylvia, Caroline and Ann really enjoyed it too. A great compliment to your enthusiasm and passion for all aspects of the war!

We visited the Indian and Chinese cemetery in Ayette today, which I suspect will have a direct link with the retrieval of the dead “second half” of your tour. Not wishing to sound too morbid, but looking forward to it, next time we’re over.

Great stuff Richard, keep up the good work!

Lora, Trudy & Josh, 2018

Dear Richard,

We just wanted to let you know that we made it home safely. Thanks again for all you did for us. I think I have told my coworkers more about the battlfields than about the sights in Paris!

We appreciate the interest you took in Josh and the patience you had when answering all of our questions.

Mom and I are talking about bringing Josh back to France when I lose the next 50 pounds. We will book you for another tour!

We hope you got Michelle's list finished. Good luck on your run.

Best wishes,

Lora, Trudy, and Josh

Hi Richard,

Thanks for your lovely email. It was great to meet you again (must be 5 or 6 times now?) and believe me, Sue and I really enjoyed ourselves and learnt a lot- I don’t know how you manage to store so much information and detail. I certainly wouldn’t choose another guide and as such the choice made itself.

We both agree that the area is very different to other areas. I now intend to get Horne’s book, and consolidate what you told us and I too am suffering with mossie bites!!

Till next time

Hi Richard,

I am back to work today (unfortunately) and just received your email.  Thanks so much for the wonderful tour on Wednesday.  It was truly an unforgettable experience and we enjoyed it immensely.  What we especially loved was how much you clearly enjoy the history and sharing it with other people.  It was infectious and made the tour even better!

We will definitely recommend your tour to our friend that is visiting in October.

David & Sue Griffen, 2018

Richard

Just to say a huge 'Thank You' again.

We both thoroughly enjoyed our two days with you - your detailed descriptions, guidance and pursuit of the personal details relating to my father and uncle were amazing and far exceeded our expectations. In addition we very much enjoyed your company, humour and enthusiasm!

I will send you an electronic copy of my father's memoires as promised but the file is too big to attach to this email it seems.

Thank you again and very best wishes

Dear Richard.

A quick email before you embark on your next project to thank you for the most amazing way you conducted our day together on Tuesday. We learnt so much about our grandfather's last few days. It way exceeded any hopes we might have dared give voice to. We appreciated the effort you had put into your research on our behalf, the meticulousness of your planning, presentations and explanations. And above all the empathy and sensitivity you radiated as you told his story.

We were thrilled.

We will be in touch.

Thank you again and every best wish for your continued success.

Gill Smith.

Andrew Riddick & Family, 2018

Dear Ron - massive thanks for the introduction to Richard Porter. He was absolutely brilliant and we had the most amazing two days with him. The children had a ball and my brother John, his son Jack and I found it incredibly interesting and illuminating. We could not have had a better person to take us around. So thank you for the introduction. It was great to have the three William's together, Sargent William, Godson William and myself. The only one missing was my father John Gordon William. We made it to the grave 100 years to the day. It was emotional, however distant it all is. Very proud. Thanks again for your help and of course to Richard.

Dear Richard,

We all could not have enjoyed ourselves more. The children have all commented how interesting the trip was but I think John and I were totally blown away both by what we saw and felt, while also hugely appreciating your knowledge and erudition.

At no point did we feel overpowered by your understanding of the events, but at the same time you were always able to answer any question we proffered. I will do my best to send others your way, confident in the knowledge that they will take as much out of any trip with you as we did.

We really appreciated the effort you went to researching the last few days of William. It was absolutely brilliant and I never expected that you would go to such effort - and that we might see as much as we did.

I was so struck by how exposed and open they must have felt as they tried to hold up the German offensive. There really was no where to hide. It leaves me feeling very small, knowing how hard I would find it to do my duty in such circumstances.

Should you ever make it to Hong Kong, please tell me. I would love to return some hospitality to the both of you.

Best wishes,

Richard,

Just a  follow up from Andrew’s email and to endorse his comments. I am no aficionado of WW1 but you brought everything to life in a meaningful way-  explaining  the basic background and building on that generic information, to delivering specific data on William was great delivery.

It made the whole 2 days very memorable for Jack and I as it did for Andrew and his children..

With best wishes,

John

Hello Richard,

We arrived home late last night. We had good weather in Paris and a super time.

Marc said the highlight of his entire trip was our day with you. I believe thats what makes the difference in visits around the world, whether it be hiking in Madagascar or visiting the battlefields, is the guide.  It can be a crapshoot when choosing from the many guides available. We certainly hit the jackpot there!!! You were fabulous as a guide, and also just a pleasure to be with. I would be pleased to post a review on a website if you would like.

I thank you, and wish you a yours a wonderful weekend.

Warm regards,

Carol

Morning Richard,

I am sure I speak for all in saying yet again another totally enjoyable and memorable trip. Yet again you surpassed yourself with great information regarding all the sites we visited.

On the way back we were already discussing next year’s trip so we will be in touch in due course.

As for the tunnel it was seamless unlike Keith’s onward flight from Eastleigh airport which was delayed from 18:40 to 22:50 so a long day for him. Take care and we will see you next year.

Thank you

Paul, Mark, Simon and Keith

Alex Parker, 2017

Hi Richard,

Sorry for the delay in responding but we just got back from our trip and I have been working my way through the never ending list of emails.

Yes, we were all sorry that we missed you too as we wanted to thank you personally for the incredible experience you gave us during your guided tour. Your knowledge and passion was incredible and we really appreciated how you could feed off our questions and provide us with such a structured back story. Most importantly the boys didn’t stop talking about the tour and how much they enjoyed and learned from it.

My only regret is that we didn’t have enough time to sit down and have a beer and a yarn with you and Michelle – maybe next time!

Good luck to you and Michelle and I will be strongly recommending your accommodation and tours to anybody I know who will be heading over.

Alex, Sigrid, Matthew and Daniel.

Sue Brennan, 2017

Hi Richard,

Thanks for your email. We really enjoyed our day with you and learned so much about the Battle of the Somme. You can read about it but there is nothing like moving over and standing on the same ground as those involved in the battles of 1916. It was a very moving experience. It was really good to do this in a small group with you being able to guide us and answer all of our questions. Thank you again Richard. It was a very memorable day for all of us.

All the best and Kind regards, Sue

Frank & Kerry Bennett-Reed, 2017

Hi Richard,

Thanks for your lovely message and thank you even more for the wonderful tour. We have talked a lot about how much we enjoyed it and for me with so little knowledge and until now not so much interest it was truly amazing! I so enjoyed all of it and feel very engaged in our history now. That was largely down to you! Yesterday we went to Albert and loved the museum, Frank also got a Tommy helmet there, great condition.  Afternoon we went back to Vimy and walked the tranches and tunnel.

We are now at the airport and heading to Leamington Spa for a few days before home. For sure we will be back and will try to book well ahead in order to stay with you. Goes without saying we will look forward to having you as our guide.

Thanks again,

Kerry

P.S Frank says it was a pleasure hearing the history from someone so knowledgeable and passionate about it.

Paul Manley, 2017

Hi Richard,

Just to say thanks again for Friday. It was a really good day and a perfectly pitched tour. We realise the brief wasn't easy and the target audience wide ranging but you were really engaging with the kids and I know how much it meant to my mother-in-law and her cousin to be taken to Arthur's 'last place'. It is something they would never have found through their own research and it was a humbling moment being stood in those woods thinking about what happened on 5th May 1917.

We would be very happy to provide references/testimonials should you need them at any point in the future.

Good luck with your own house renovations and thanks again.

Kind regards,

Paul and Jo

David Wright, 2017

Thank you Richard.

We all had a great time and also enjoyed the banter.

We went back up to right bank and had a look at Fort Souville (or at least I think we did as there were no sign posts to indicate what was where) and we all had a good bit of banter deciding what was what. We were going to send you pictures demanding to know what was what until we realised none of us had internet connection! We went on to the 4 Chimneys and then onto Froideterre Ouvrance. Managed to have a good poke around inside.

Thank you again for your time and we will definitely give you a shout next time, hopefully next year.

Cheers,

David Wright

John & Lesley Walker, 2017

Hello Richard,

I write to thank you, Michelle and Jonathan for making our trip to the Battlefields so memorable.

We all had the most amazing time. Thought provoking, emotional, awe inspiring, overwhelming, informative and illuminating - all come to mind as I recall our time in France. How on earth, Richard, can you store so many facts in your brain and then put them into such interesting and understandable talks? We were all in awe of your expertise.

The accommodation and your ever present availability at Chavasse Farm, made us not only very comfortable but gave us a very welcome feeling. The memorabilia inside the house certainly adds much to its ambience. May I also mention the immaculate laundry provided and the exceedingly well stocked kitchen. Even Noel (the self appointed chef) was thrilled to find his every need was in fact catered for.

Thank you also for your careful driving in your comfortable car.

We enjoyed the BBQ very much and the lovely setting and immaculate gardens did much to add to the setting.

Do you get the feeling that we really enjoyed our stay? I do hope so.

To one and all - our very grateful thanks for such a wonderful visit.

Sincerely

Lesley

Hi Richard

Thanks for the email and of course thanks for your company on Saturday, having you with us made a world of difference. You are a mine of information!

We had a splendid weekend but felt a little jaded driving home yesterday. I’d like to write a good review for you, what did you say was the best way to do it?

Best wishes,

Courtenae, Lyn & Sharon, 2017

Hey Richard,

Just wanted to shoot you a line to say thank you so much for the tour that you took us on. We all thoroughly enjoyed it and learnt a great deal.

Nan was very moved to be able to see where James was and to be able to walk in his footsteps is something none of us will forget. Thank you also for your advice regarding the dawn service at VB, that will come in handy when I am caffeine fueled and attempting to get us all to the park and ride at Glisy at half past stupid o'clock in a few days time.

Thank you once again and all the best

Courtenae, Lyn & Sharon

Hi Richard,

That's us back home after a memorable time at the Somme.

We have for a number of years wanted to do the tour, particularly Peter Bagley' s war, and you made it so special, personal, informative and memorable for us, so many, many thanks. It was a special day for us, and we could see how much research you put into it, to make it a day we will treasure.

In addition we were struck by how much knowledge you had about WW 1 in general, not just about Peter, and the passion you have made it all the more interested. The fact that you made a bit of a detour to show us the Mametz Wood story showed also your breadth of knowledge about the whole episode and was lovely for Stretch to understand, given his Welsh background. We were so pleased that you guided us, and are very grateful that the one off experience we wanted was so memorable and enjoyable.

Many, many, thanks again.

We have decided to plan a trip next year to Loos, hopefully you can help with that. It was a pleasure for all of us to spend that special day with you.

Kind regards

Marion

Good Afternoon Richard

As a proud Canadian watching the Vimy ceremony from Canada I just wanted to once again thank you for the awesome tour. Your knowledge brought the entire area to life for us.

Wishing you all the best.

Sarah & Margaret Mason, 2017

Hi Richard

We made it to the museum with no problems and thought it was very good. The journey home was fine too thank you.

I am so pleased I came across your web site. We both had a fascinating time. Your way of 'bringing the battlefield to life' and your knowledge in all areas was just superb and you looked after us extremely well. I have learnt so much about my grandfather's actions and about the general history from that period, it has been invaluable for my understanding and research.

To compensate for not being on the battlefield today and hearing your explanations I have watched Tank men this morning!

Thank you for sending the maps.

Thank again and best wishes

Sarah & Margaret.

Brian & Deborah, 2017

Hello Richard and Michelle

Thank you for your kind thoughts and assistance.  We were able to return to Ottawa with luggage in hand! Brian has been doing a lot of looking at the War Diaries, thanks to the link you sent us.  Going to Vimy Ridge was the reason for our trip, and the whole battlefield experience met and exceeded my expectations.

Again, thank you for everything - it was the little things like laundry that made the entire experience well worth it.  We have been telling folks here about our wonderful tour with you folks.

Best wishes to both of you!

Deborah and Brian

Cindy & her father Carl, 2017

Richard

Thanks so much for a great day! Both Dad and I enjoyed it and found it extremely informative.  We were impressed with all your knowledge on the war.  I know I definitely learned lots.  Seeing the battlefields in person sure does give you a new perspective on what the soldiers were up against.

I appreciated how you took your time with us never rushing us and answering all of our questions, as well we enjoyed the stories you had to tell us,

Thanks again for a great tour

Cindy & Carl

Dennis & Jon, 2017

Can’t express enough how much we enjoyed the tour this time. You have my dream job.  Ordered a bunch more books off Amazon on the Ypres battles and Belleau Wood with the USMC. And really looking forward to more tours in the future.

Jon sat next to a flight attendant who was coming back from a Normandy tour and was very interested in what we had just done and wanted tour information so I gave her your email address.  Hopefully some additional business will be coming your way!

Angela Leyden, 2016

Hi Richard

Just a quick note to say thank you so much for the amazing two days we had with you last week.

We could not have asked for a better guide - educating and entertaining two adults, an 11 year old and a 14 year old for two days is no easy feat !

We all learnt a huge amount and we know that Zac and Ethan will have a new appreciation for both WW1 and the Somme and its hardships in their future studies.

Thank you especially for the work that you did in retrieving the information (and showing us) about James Woodlands service in the AIF. We had little idea that he was defending Villers Bretonneux when he was wounded and it was very moving to visit his grave in Aubigny.

Your knowledge of the Battlefields is outstanding and the fact you are such a good bloke that can communicate with all ages makes your tours outstanding. Unsurprisingly the boys loved the first hand tutoring on WW 1 weapons....

Bon Noel to you and Michelle and we wish you a safe and happy trip to Asia in February.

Kindest Regards

Darran, Ange, Zac and Ethan

David Oxenham & Dan, 2016

Richard

I can't say how grateful I am for the experience you have provided to Dan and I.

The general history of the war and the ensuing battles and then the detail you provided to recount my grandfathers and great uncles movements and involvement were very special indeed.

Thank you for all you have done to make the experience so personal.

Kind regards

David

Michelle Brooke & Family, 2016

Hi Richard,

We got back to Lille ok and are now all back in London and Berlin respectively Sorry for the delay replying to your email - this is the first time I've had a chance to sit down and write a 'proper' email rather than using my phone since we got back. It's been one of those weeks!

We can't thank you enough for the tour you put together last Saturday - the time you had spent preparing was obvious and it means so much to us to now have so much more information and context around what happened to Edwin. It was such a great day from beginning to end, so informative yet fun and we are all now inspired to go away and find out more about Edwin, the Somme and WW1 in general - in fact James has been on a roll for the last week sending loads of links through!

Your passion and knowledge for the subject is clear and Mum and Dad commented on the train home that you are the best guide we've ever had for anything, ever. If you ever want us to put a review anywhere online just let me know.

We really had such a great day, and even though the reason that brought us there was sad we came away feeling that we had such an enjoyable day, and finally what happened to Edwin is no longer a mystery.

Thank you so much again,

Michelle, Angela, Bob & James

‘Tank Men’ BBC WW1 Documentary

Hey Richard,

Hope your well. Just wanted to confirm with you that Tank Men is broadcasting on BBC 1 South next Friday (9th) at 19.30. It will also be on BBC Four on 15th September at 20.00. The film is looking great and you appear throughout – so thanks again, could not have done it without you.

Many Thanks

Sarah & Andy, 2016

Hi Richard

A friend of mine mentioned a programme called Tank Men that was on yesterday. He said the guide was brilliant and very knowledgeable. We found the programme on catch-up as we had missed it and we're very pleased to see the guide was you! We feel even more privileged to stay with you and hopefully call you and Michelle friends.

Lots of love

Sarah and Andy

Robert & Kathy Finn + Amy & Daniel, 2016

Richard thanks so much for today. We all had a ball, learnt so much and found everything we visited better than expected. Dan's highlights- the bunker and finding the shell and bits and pieces!  We will certainly be spreading word of your tours - can we review on a website when we get home. Please do let us know if coming to Hillsborough Robert can open the museum and just let him know beforehand. Glad you fessed up to your 'gift' for Michelle!

Thank you again we thoroughly enjoyed today.

Scott Barker, 2016

Hi Richard.

Thank you so much for the photos! The Verdun tour that you planned and guided was fantastic and far exceeded my expectations. Your description of the overall terrain, including geology, and the logistics build up helped me understand the massive scale of the battle, and your description of veteran's accounts, which were made more vivid given your own military service, gave me insight to the human costs of war. I very much enjoyed our many conversations about all aspects of the Great War and other conflicts, and I appreciate your suggestions for sites to visit particularly on the third day, especially Butte de Vauquois and Montfaucon. I think what really brought things home to me were the many military cemeteries that we passed as we went from place to place. Perhaps the most valuable thing from my perspective is your great passion for the subject matter, which was evident in all areas of the tour.  Thank you for making this a truly memorable experience, and I would be happy to recommend your services.

Also, thanks for dropping me at Reims. I was back in Paris by 1930 and was able to tick the last few items off my list the next day, before my harrowing journey back to San Diego yesterday.

Thanks again for everything!

All the best,

Scott

As I get into processing/selecting the many images captured I will likely refer back to you several times. It has been a long haul but I hope that if Aubrey is out there somewhere, he would be happy. Thanks very much also for the patience, enthusiasm and the heaps of useful information.

All the best and thanks again

Lionel Louw, 2016

Hi Richard,

Just got to Berlin. Yes, at my end similar feelings- great meeting you, enjoyed your company very much and looking forward to plan a tour of the Somme and Ypres with my family for next year. Saturday was a good idea,  but of course time was too short. Saw the museum at Zonnebeeke - what a great effort. Very moving, humbling experience.

Many thanks for a great week, you are a true professional.

Lionel

Richard Ellis Group, 2016

Hi Richard

Thanks for taking us on the tour on Monday. The girls really enjoyed it. As usual, you made it all so accessible.

I'll get back to you on some dates for next year after I've had a chance to talk to Dave when we are back in the UK. Its continued raining in Normandy.

All the best

Richard

Scott & Jean Hutchinson, 2016

Hi Richard

We are now back in Adelaide, and have often been thinking back on the 2 days we spent in the Somme with you 2 weeks ago.  We wanted to let you know how grateful we are for your expert guidance, and all the information you were able to provide.  From our perspective, we achieved what we had hoped:  to see some of the significant Australia and New Zealand aspects of the Battle of the Somme and, in particular, to see where my grandfather was wounded and to understand the circumstances of the Battle of Flers-Courcelette in which he was wounded on 15 September 1916.

We much appreciated all the research you had undertaken and the details you were able to provide us with: the route my grandfather would have taken to the frontline, the location of the trenches he would have advanced from, where and how he would most likely have been wounded by a lead bullet from an 18 lb shell; and then, how he would have been evacuated from the frontline.  Particularly emotional for us was to see, in Caterpillar Valley Cemetery, the gravestones of men from my grandfather’s regiment who had died the same day my grandfather was wounded.  They could well have been his comrades who fell alongside him; he survived (albeit badly wounded), but they died.

It was telling for us to see so many of the other significant locations during the 2 days: Lochnagar Crater (where we saw that last week a commemoration was held on 1 July); VC Corner memorial and cemetery; Fromelle and Pheasant Wood; Villers-Bretonneux, and so on.  We agree with the quote from Albert Schweitzer at the Neuville-St. Vaast German Cemetery: “The soldiers’ graves are the greatest preachers of peace.”

Thank you again for showing us and explaining to us so effectively the reality of this part of my family history – we are most grateful.

Kind regards

Scott (& Jean) Hutchinson

PS.  We’re quite happy for you to pass these comments on to any of your prospective clients.

Paul Mooring & Matt, 2016

Hi Richard,

Thank you very much for the tour we really enjoyed it, as always.

Verdun was amazing and we got a lot done in 10 hours. Ticked the whole list with both flanks and even got the USA cemetery in as well.

Returned to Ypres and traced the final days of the battle in Passchendaele with the German cemetery as well.

Tired now but looking forward to our next tour with you.

See you again soon.

Paul

Sue Hinds + 10 family members, 2016

Dear Richard & Michelle,

Thank you for your e-mails filled with interesting books & map lists.

Richard, you did indeed give us a most interesting Tour; it certainly couldn't have been fuller & more informative. With stories from the days of the terrible war you managed to catch our imagination telling of the lives of the millions of soldiers who fought & of the villagers, plus the mind blowing picture of their beloved Hardecourt being raised to the ground & their livlihood taken away.

Michelle, you are a fantastic housekeeper; everything was so beautifully clean, tidy and well presented. I felt we were living the history in the past that you all have managed to create in Chavasse Farm-- a special 'hats off' to someone who enjoys ironing so much!

So, a very special big thank you to all you Porters for creating and welcoming us to the perfect place to celebrate Kevin's 70th (one who is SO crazy about history & war in particular). We had a truly marvellous time.

Kind regards,

Sue Hinds

John Walsh, Adrian, Martin & Shane, 2016

Richard,

Thanks so much for both your company and guidance over the few days. We learned a great deal more about the Great War and had a belter of a trip to boot. The photos and book excerpts are much appreciated. I'm putting together a few bits for Martin’s relations to have as a keep sake.

We got home safe and sound, albeit the huge delays in the airport brought the mood down a bit..... one chap was dragged off the airport bus we were on by military police for matching a profile picture.....all very surreal.

Anyway we were chatting on the flight home...planning our next trip...and discussing where to go. If you have, or, think of later, any suggestions of trips that you could give, which would suit us we would be delighted to hear from you.

On behalf of all the men a sincere thanks

John

Paul Bailey, 2016

Good morning Richard,

Can I say on behalf of myself, Mark, Simon and Neil thank you for a memorable experience.  I admit that we were unsure about hiring a guide but can I say money well spent.  Your knowledge (and your passion) made what could have been a routine wander around cemetery’s very mundane but far from it.

If you need any recommendations in the future then please do not hesitate to contact me – it would be a glowing recommendation.

Thanks again for making it a brilliant trip and awakening more interest, especially for myself (Much to the delight of the wife….)

Good luck with your car and hope its fixed soon.

All the best

Paul, Mark, Simon and Neil.

PS – I cleaned the spoon up a little only to find there is a third initial which I think is a ‘W’ but with some more gentle cleaning it may reveal itself as such enabling me to search further.  I will let you know what I find out.

Jonathan Buckle & Dominic, 2016

Hi Richard,

Thanks for your message and just wanted to say thank you and how much we enjoyed your tour. If I hear of anyone coming over to France/ Belgium looking for a tour I will definitely recommend your services.

Best regards,

Jonathan.

Good morning Richard

Thank you for a great five days, we all appreciated your in depth knowledge and enthusiasm. We all said how much we got out of the trip, you were top notch and made the trip special. I'm sure we will enjoy more trips to the battlefields in your company

All best wishes

Bruce & Lori, 2015

Hi Richard

Hope all is well and glad to hear you are busy.  Lori and I have done our first draft of the trip.  The days that seem best to tour with you are the 17th and 18th of Sept 2016. We had at least 10 guides on our last trip and you were by far our favorite so we look forward to seeing you again.

Bruce and Lori

Russell & Julie Smith, 2015

Richard,

Apologies for not emailing our thanks for your tour sooner but we have been very busy back in Australia. I realise it has been 6 months since our trip to Northern France. We wish to thank you for our escorted tour in May this year to Bullecourt, Villers Bretonneux, Fromelles and Ypres. The experience was enlightening but sad with the remembrance of the sacrifices and fallen soldiers, especially my wife’s great uncle Louis Randall McCoy of the 20th Battalion AIF at Bullecourt.

The tour coverage was excellent your assistance very worthwhile and your insights into the WW1 battlefields and experiences were most welcome.

We would welcome the opportunity to tour with you in the future.

We hope you and your family have an enjoyable Xmas and New Year and get some rest through the holiday season.

Regards,

Russell and Julie Smith

Kevin & Lana Keelty, 2015

Hi Richard

Just a note to say again how much we enjoyed touring with you, and to say the Last Post ceremony last evening was extraordinary.  The order of the ceremony was as you described - the commonwealth soldier whose biography was read last evening was that of a very famous English cricketer who enlisted in 1914 and died in 1916.  He was buried in England and his epitaph reads “Cricketer and Bowler for England”.  An Irish violinist played Danny Boy andother appropriate music - very moving.

Thanks again.  Lana and Kevin Keelty

Susie Herne Tour, 2015

Dear Richard,

So sorry I couldn't make it to France in the end ..... as you say, maybe another time! My friends all found your tours extremely interesting and said your input made the trip.

Many thanks and best wishes,

Susie Herne

Tour Reviews From The Early Years

Hello Richard

Thanks for the update, am pleased all went well!  We had a super time and enjoyed all of it, especially our walk with you, and we will certainly visit again in the next year or two.  In fact, my girlfriend wants to visit next year so we can take her 2 boys along, so will be getting in touch with Jonathan about that soon.  Assuming that happens, we'll definitely want you to guide us somewhere, so will keep you posted. Meantime, very best wishes from all of us and many thanks for a brilliantly guided walk!

Hi Richard

Thanks very much for a fantastic day touring the Somme battlefields. It was a memorable experience and we appreciated all the insights and information that you shared with us.

Hi Richard

We had an easy journey home and we got some booze. We had a great time, walking the fields and it gave me an appreciation of the distances the soldiers had to cover and how exposed they were to the Germans. Your knowledge was superb I’ve got a lot of reading to do to catch up.

Hi Richard.

Just returned to work and got your e-mail ......   again, thanks so very much for our tour ..... we really had no idea what we were asking you to do and we were very grateful for the amazing distances and longer time you dedicated to us. We have all voted it the highlight of our trip -- we loved it. I have kept your e-mail details for future use and will certainly recommend you and the tour to anyone I hear interested ..... you were terrific !

Hi Richard,

We have just got back from our wonderful experience on the Somme. I want to thank you so much for guiding us around the sites where Jack walked all those years ago. The tour exceeded all our expectations, it was an experience I certainly will never forget.

Hi Richard,

First day back at work (groan).

Thanks again for an excellent day - it was one of the most interesting days I think I've ever had, and I know my Dad thoroughly enjoyed it too. We very much appreciated the work you had done to research, prepare and personalise the day. It was so interesting we wouldn't even let you stop for lunch!

I'm going to try and follow up on my other great grandfather who was in the RFA, via the Woolwich museum you mentioned. I'll leave the third great grandfather who was in Maidstone Military Prison at the end of the war until later! I hope the archaeology goes well. That was fascinating too, and I'll be looking out for it on the tele.

Hi Richard

I just wanted to thank you so very much for a most memorable experience in the battlefields in Northern France and Belgium.  It was the highlight of both our trip overseas.  We did not realise beforehand it was only going to be just ourselves and you.  Therefore it was very special for us.  We really appreciate the extra time and effort you undertook to research “Archibald Hall”.  Even Ray was touched and moved, especially when you were able to show us, perhaps his final resting place. We thank you for your empathy, obvious passion, extensive knowledge and extra research. Even though obviously, I did not know any of my relatives who lost their lives due to the war effort, I found the whole experience very emotional and I definitely would like to research and obtain as many facts of their existence to ensure future family members will know and appreciate the great sacrifices they made, and it is part of their heritage.  It would have been a different tour without you as our guide.  You have such a great expanse of knowledge, experience, contagious enthusiasm, interest, passion and generosity in sharing your knowledge of the war and we appreciate and are very grateful you were our guide.

We have just arrived back in Australia, so I am keen to share part of “Archibald’s” life with his remaining relatives.  I am very lucky.  From Archibald’s sister (my grandmother) we have a great cousin base where we met on a regular basis and some are very keen on finding out about our family history.  Maybe some will be keen to travel for the hundred anniversary.  I guess booking would have to be made soon and I’m not sure the maximum you can take on the battlefields tours.  I think it is essential to have a guide to give the valuable insight and knowledge they know of the area.

I’m not sure if you remember when we were on your tour, I mentioned my work colleague had a relative that was recently identified in Pheasant Wood.  I  thought the surname was her married name Stein.  However it was her great uncle “George Pagan” from Gilgandra in New South Wales Australia.  Would it please be possible to obtain a copy of his gravestone at Fromelles Military Cemetery for her when you are next in the area.  There is no hurry.

After leaving your tour we travelled to the Lakes District via Preston and thought of you.

Once again, thank you for a most enjoyable, memorable and personalized experience.  We have already recommended you to others.   We met an Irish gentleman on the ferry to Ireland.  He stated he and his father was planning to view the battlefields later this year.  We stated how valuable we thought you were as our guide and the advantages of guides in general.

Hope this finds you, Michelle and Chloe all well and happy.  Good luck for your future adventures.  Take care.

Hi Richard,

Thank you for a great day and the tour was amazing and you made it much easier to understand everything with your knowledge and guidance. We will be back soon as there is so much to see and we were both blown away by the whole experience. Thank you once again and we both look forward to seeing you soon.

Richard

Thanks for a terrific day - Lesley and I both enjoyed it and found it very interesting. It certainly was memorable, particularly being able to visualise the scene at Mametz.

Hi Richard,

Thanks so much for your excellent guidance thru the battlefields. It was a highlight for both of us especially Moya. I know she is looking forward to talking to her family about the experience. We made it to Versailles and saw the table where the armistice was signed in the hall of mirrors. We greatly enjoyed the day and will certainly recommend you to anyone we know who plans to visit the battlefields.

Hello Richard,

Received your emails this morning and thanks very much for checking to see if there was any info in the book.

I am attaching a copy of Ned Martin’s Service Record, it looks fairly straight forward but it may be of interest or you may pick up something not obvious to us. His mother’s address on the Casualty sheet should read “Clopton St, Toowoomba, Queensland”. We are currently in Amsterdam and start the cruise today. Thanks again for your effort and interest on our tour which really made it for us. Will keep in touch.

Hi Richard,

Thanks again for your effort on our recent WW1 Battlefield tour. We both thoroughly enjoyed the experience and this is no doubt due to your knowledge and your ability to pass it on. Thanks also for your patience with us which was very much appreciated. I will be re-reading my WW1 books with renewed interest now that I have the additional knowledge. I will send a few photos of the bunker near Sailly but will reduce the size and split them up so they will come later.

Again Richard, thanks for everything

Hello Bevan,

A short note to thank you very much for our recent Western Front Tour. Everything went magnificently and I could not pass on enough praise in regard to our tour guide Richard (I think his surname is Porter). His knowledge of the WW1 area and WW1 battles plus his ability to pass on the information really made the visit worthwhile. He was very friendly, easy going and most patient with us and his military background added to the experience.

Again thanks very much to you and your group for arranging the tour, it was money well spent.

Hi Richard,

Thanks a lot for the email. I'm just sitting at the airport ready to board my flight back to Sydney, and I intended to email you when I arrived back. Dad, Jane and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Chavasse Farm, and the tour with you was definitely the highlight. Dad was in his element and he was very impressed with your knowledge of the Somme; we couldn't have asked for a better way to spend his 70th birthday.

I will email you next week with the photos I promised of Alexander in his uniform. I didn't have time to scan them this week but Jane will do so in the next couple of days and I'll then forward them on. We saw the live coverage of the dig on Thursday, and it looks like you're making some excellent progress.

Hello Richard,

Thought I would drop you a line and thank you again for your efforts during the battlefields tour that you assisted us with as guide last month.  Both Marjory and I thought your friendliness and professionalism in the information that you imparted was exceptional.

Hello Bevan

We recently returned from Europe and our all-too-brief visit to the Western Front.  I mention the brevity because we quickly realized that to do justice to the battlefields would require far more than the available time!  Having said that, we had an excellent introduction.  Richard Porter did a wonderful job - he is of course very knowledgeable about the war sites we visited (Australian and Canadian) and was able to communicate his knowledge well.  We came away with an understanding of the geography of the battlefields, the overall WF strategy, and the strategies (and strategic importance) of the individual battles. And the heartbreak of it all.

We found Richard very friendly and personable and of course it goes without saying that he was reliable vis a vis meeting times.

Dear Richard

May I first thank you again for a superb presentation on Saturday afternoon. This is the second time you have been kind enough to look after a group of mine, and the quality of your explanation and the obvious enthusiasm you showed throughout was very gratefully received.

Dear Richard,

I would like to thank you for a most wonderful and memorable tour of the Western Front. It would have to be my highlight of our whole trip. Thank you so for the interest and research you put into Ian's family history and being able to locate the site where his grandfather received his DCM was just amazing.
I have attached the 2 photos of Villers - Bretonneux taken in the morning mist. My Year 5 class worked on a collage similar to one I photographed at the British memorial. They were very excited that I was sending you a photo of their work!  I showed the children the pieces of shrapnel and they were so interested and keen to touch and ask questions.

Hi Richard

Thank you for the guided walk – it went down very well with everybody, and thought the visual aids you used were very helpful to appreciate the events of the time. The personal folder for Frank Wright (for Gavin) was a lovely touch too; thank you for going the extra mile. I know he appreciated it.

Hi Richard,

Just a word of thanks from Paul and I for the tour last Saturday - it was second to none and your knowledge and enthusiasm is first class !! We would like to think we'll return to the Somme and, when we do, we'll be in touch if that's OK with you.

Hi Richard

Wow my parents had the best time with you and have spent the evening telling me all about it!! Dad was particularly keen on going and he was so chuffed with everything you did for them but also touched with the efforts you went to in personalising the whole experience.  He isnt someone who often is particular about doing something but this was something he was really wanting to do and i am so glad he was able to visit and that you made it such a successful trip! I am truly grateful to you. I don't know if they had told you that it was my friend Vicki that had recommended you to me and I will certainly be passing on your details if others ask me :)

I only wish we could have come to but this small baby has put a halt my travelling!

Thanks again for everything

(Text on mobile) Richard, I had more than a good day yesterday, I had a fantastic day thank you very much. Your expertise made it all the more interesting.

HI Richard,

I just wanted to follow up with you after our tour on July 4. It was a very special day for us and the highlight of our trip to France. I really appreciate how attentive you were to my father and how you were so easily able to adjust to his pace and his hearing issues. There are often lots of things he misses in such situations and it was so important to us that he was engaged in the entire day, and he certainly was.

We all very much enjoyed the tour, particularly how you were able to present so much information in a way that was not at all overwhelming. Rather, it was so well integrated in terms of how you set the background and then presented the battle. We felt that we came away with a certain depth of knowledge and also a real feeling of what it must have been like for our grandfather. Very moving for all of us, and memorable for having shared it with my Dad. He has commented again and again on how much it meant to him.

Thanks again!

Hi Richard

Thanks again for taking us on the tour last Wednesday and for sharing your knowledge and enthusiasm with us. We all enjoyed it and got a lot out of it. We're already talking about next year!

I've looked up Messenger's Call to Arms and will get in from Amazon when I return from holiday.  It looks a good read.  Good luck with your 50 mile run.

Hi Richard

Hope you are well and enjoyed your time back in UK.

We thoroughly enjoyed our 3 days with you, the itinerary was well paced and flexible enough to account for weather changes etc, (although the time went too quick and we had to take in a lot of info in a short time). Jan was very excited that you were able to locate the burial place of her great uncle and the fact that you were able to get permission from the owners of the land for her to place a memorial cross in their garden (I think this was a highlight of our European trip for her).

We were hoping to have reviewed all of our front line stuff by now as our families are keen to see it, but I had a bit of a set back when I got home. Three days after landing back in Aussie and trying to get over the jet lag, I slipped on the polished floorboards in our lounge room and broke my leg. I was in hospital for a week waiting to get operated on (they had to put a plate and ten screws in my leg) and now I am home, housebound on the couch,,,,,,, Yep, Jan has lost her house husband and now has a patient, so she is a bit grumpy and occasionally makes noise about needing a holiday after I recover (I think she is including me in scenario??)

Anyhow, time will fix.

Thanks again for the great three days and we certainly have no hesitation about recommending you to any of our friends or travelling colleges.

Hello Richard

Sorry to have been quite a long time getting back to you, but very many thanks for an excellent day last week. Thank you and Tom Tulloch-Marshall, for all the research you did for us. We have spent quite a lot of time since we got back piecing together all the evidence, and feel we now have a good understanding of the events surrounding the medal actions for Harold Colley, and the action in which Walter West died.  To see where it all happened on the ground was a big bonus and gave us an appreciation of the topography of the area. For Edward Ford, we appreciate it was always going to be a broad look at the area in which his unit was active.

Again many thanks

Hello Richard,

Just touching base to let you know that we have arrived back in Australia, safe and sound.  Have been meaning to write for some time but I just don’t know where the time has gone since we arrived home a little over 5 weeks ago.  We had a marvellous time on the cruise from Amsterdam to Budapest and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.  The whole trip was just amazing.  We can’t thank you enough for all you did for us in the four days we spent with you.  It truly was just an awesome experience and looking at all the photos that we took brings it all back.  I think I am more emotional about it now that when we were there!!  The disc that you gave me with the information about Lauriston Fraser was so interesting.  I found the Unit War diaries and Operation Records and the maps that Tom included gave a real insight into the everyday life of the soldiers.  We are still sorting through the photos (all 8,000 of them) but the ones we took with you look really great.  I’ll send a couple over to you as soon as I can. There’s one of us in Villiers-Bretonneux that I’m sure you can see the rain pouring off us!!  What a day that was!!

Hi Richard . . . Thank you for the note and many thanks again for the wonderful day touring around. We all had a great day. We appreciate your commentary and story-telling. Thank Michelle again for the great lunch. David finished the last sandwich on the train ride back to Paris. Hopefully we get a chance to use your expertise for other parts of the battlefield. In the meantime, I'll be sure to recommend your talents to others.

Richard, We are exhausted.... only home since 6 this evening but we can safely say we had a fantastic trip. Snowden house is a credit to you and the tour was top class. It was a few days we will remember for some time and will be sure to recommend both to any of our friends that are interested. We packed in a fair bit into the few days and even on Tuesday up in Normandy as well and still managed to have enough time to buy a few bottles of wine in Cherbourg. All round everyone delighted with it. We did a highs and lows recount over a few pints on the ferry....each person had something different but the field walk near the old wind mill where we found the shell after nearly a century......this really brought it home to me....the Canadian memorial.....Willie McBride’s grave.......the deer up in Delville Wood all scored well but all said it was the education we gained from your insight of war tactics and the knowledge of the battles and the area was the key for the success. The lows...the farting in the car and Adrian did get a bit freaked out up in Delville Wood after sunset.....he’s convinced its haunted. On behalf of the men I’d like to thank you again for a great tour and I’d like to thank you for how easy you made it to organise. We might be in contact again to do an Ypres tour next year....I’ll have to build back up some brownie points at home first though.

Hi Richard,

MANY thanks for yet another enjoyable few days. We struggled on without you.. YES made the “Gate” and it was worthwhile. Went to Ghent and Waterloo and then last day in Brugge before heading back along the cost road to Calais. I will forward your email to David so he and Lizzie can take it from there..

Once again; all the best and many thanks.

Hi Richard

Just wanted to say a big thanks for all the hard work you did this week. We had a truly wonderful time with you, we learnt so much and you made the learning so interesting. I know Jan was really happy with all the information you gave her, and I think she's going to carry on researching what her granddad did in more detail. We were with some other friends last night and they were saying they have always wanted to go on a Battlefields Tour, so gave them your name. You'll be glad to know I am warm today! Summer dress and no layers. Long may it continue. Hope you have a lovely week and good luck with the tours, houses and general research. Good luck too with The Ironman. Tony and Rod will follow you I have no doubt. Tony hobbling has just done an 18 mile training walk for the charity walk next Monday. Hope he recovers before then!!

Dear Richard

Cherry and I just wanted to say many thanks and how much we enjoyed the tour this week.

You have a great ability to bring those terrible events to life. The horror, bravery, sadness and humor were all there in your narrative. It was a truly remarkable experience thanks to your skill and expertise. All of our party were moved by your outstanding service.

Kindest regards.

Hi Richard, many thanks for making the tour so interesting - your enthusiasm is infectious! We had a smooth journey home on the tunnel and then up to Yorkshire with no hold ups and the car did not let us down.

Hi Richard

Thanks again for the 2 days of touring, you covered everything we were looking for and more.  I really wish we had had more time to spend in the area, but in the short time available, we certainly gained a greater appreciation and understanding of the scope, the physical layout, and the problems and experiences encountered by the Canadians in WWI.  And despite my occasional disorientation with the location of the front lines, I can safely say that I have much more knowledge about the war and how it was waged.  Your attention to meeting our tour goals was much appreciated!   One of the things I liked the most was your use of each locale to touch on different aspects of the war.  We will certainly be sure to recommend your company to others interested in WWI battlefield tours.

I was very interested in the different cemeteries we visited, their layout, horticulture, and the overall feeling of quiet and respect.  The CWGC is an interesting organization.  I wish there were opportunities to work with them on either a volunteer or paid basis, but that isn't likely for people residing in Canada.

We'll let you know if we have any questions as we go through our photos.

Best wishes.

Hello Richard

So nice to hear from you and to learn that everything went prefectly with the tours that you provided for Garry & Sue. From your first email in which you stated the suggested itineraries & highlights for both day tours, I knew that my clients where in very good hands. I haven't heard from Garry & Sue re the battlefield tours but I did receive pics from them in Amiens and they were in love with the city. I belong to a travel group, MTA Travel, that comprise approximately 300 individual experienced consultants who work as independent operators from home. I will speak to their product department and pass on my comments & recommendations on your very professional & efficient service. Well done and I too look forward to working again with you in the future. Kind regards & thank you for looking after my valued clients.

Hi Richard,

It's a week since we spent the weekend with you on the battlefields. We got to Bruges OK - no worries. It's a nice city and we enjoyed it. We caught the train to Amsterdam on the Tuesday and spent 3 nights there. We got a good feel for the city and had a tour out to the countryside and saw windmills, low lying water canals, a fishing village and a wooden shoe maker. All very interesting. We flew to Dublin yesterday and have checked out the city today. We head off for a weeks touring with a car around Ireland before attending the family wedding in Poland.

All has been going to plan. Thank you very much for the comprehensive and knowledgeable tour of the battlefields. I feel I have a good idea now of what it was like for our boys and what happened to them. Thanks for all your research too. I know the family will enjoy watching the video we made. We appreciate very much your efforts to make our tour memorable.

Hi Richard,

Thank you for your kind words but it is us that must thank YOU so, so much for the wonderful experience of not only meeting yourself but for the fabulous battlefield tour that you provide to us. Thanks to yourself we gained great insight into not only the Canadians involvement in WW1 but into the other countries that contributed so greatly to it as well. We now have a much greater understanding of what transpired in WW1 but also a much greater appreciation for those who fought under such horrific conditions. While we had many wonderful guides during our tours of Europe you were by far our favorite and again we cannot thank you enough for the experience.

You mentioned that you were considering in the next few years visiting Canada.  We hope you do and if you do please consider making Vancouver one of your destinations. We would love to see you again and extend our hospitality to you and your family if you make it to Vancouver.

Again we cannot thank you enough for the great experience you provide us during our time in Ypres.

Hello Richard and Michelle,

I hope that you had a wonderful trip to Rome.  Our weather held well for the most part, and we

were thinking about you and hoping you were having the same good luck. We wanted to tell you that the tour you took us on was second to none.  It was the most amazing experience we could have ever had.  It was more then we expected and gave us such a complete idea of how the war unfolded and what those brave men (boys for the most part) went through. We enjoyed Normandy, and both our tours there, were with a group of 8 people each.  Our guides were informative but not to the level of you Richard.  We again saw amazing things when you consider how long ago these events happened. Then onto Paris, now that is a city, not for the faint of heart.  We couldn’t quite imagine how people live there all the time.  The 1st day we had rain and toured anyway, saw the Eiffel tower and took the cruise on the Seine, (rain had stopped). Quite amazing, the buildings and the bridges all very impressive.  The 2nd day we took hop on and hop off bus and it was a nice day and we really saw a lot of the city.  Then we were off to Basel Switzerland and the beginning of our cruise.  The Viking cruise was unbelievable, they really do treat you like royalty.  The sights were great and the tours good.  The food was exceptional, just like Clair’s, and the journey up the Rhine was very beautiful.  Richard, you and Michelle should think of doing that for a vacation some time.

Well I have rambled on long enough, you are probably quite busy and have more to do, but we wanted to let you know how happy we were with our whole trip.  You started us out great and we will never forget how special you made us feel.

Thanks again and all the best to you

Richard

Thank you for your efforts on Monday.  We enjoyed ourselves. The bonus was the weather.

We look forward to another visit next year when we can do the Somme area.

Thanks again for a great day out.

Just a quick note to let you know how much you were in our thoughts this Rememberance Day.  Joe marched as he has since he retired.  Our weather was perfect and with the recent killings here in Canada there was more participation in the services everywhere.  Peter Mansbridge works for the CBS does our National news and did a segment from Vimy Ridge and it was showing the “subways” under Vimy and to see the monument again and know that we were just there was very emotional.  Thank you again for making our trip so wonderful.  We will never forget.

Dear Richard, thank you for your lovely email which I have forwarded to the others.   We all very much enjoyed not only your company but your knowledge and we all feel that you have given us a really good grounding and insight into the horrors of Verdun!  It is hard to take it in as it so absolutely horrendous.  I think we will all do some more reading and would be very grateful if you could recommend a bit of (not too heavy) reading, particularly about the logistics of keeping the army on the go. I think you did mention one book in particular. I felt almost guilty standing on those sites, in the glorious sunshine, and knowing that I was standing on one huge grave site and that each of those young men buried in the mud didn’t stand a chance of having the sort of lovely lives we manage to have nowadays. Almost too painful to take in and very good for us to try to understand.

I am sure that your business will continue to flourish and will certainly recommend you to anyone wanting to go to Verdun, or for that matter any of the other battle sites. We may all feel that we want to go to the Somme sometime and will be in touch if we do. At the moment it would just be a step too far as it affected me far more than I thought it would. Somehow even more than Ypres, but maybe that is because I have read a bit more about it.

Our golf was great – not a wonderful course but great fun and lovely weather.  The girls played in a four, and the men in another four.  I am glad to say that the girls won!!

This morning we went up to the Cathedral and then went into the World Peace Centre where we bought a book with loads of photos, which is good. I would like to read a bit more about the tunnel warfare, but I couldn’t remember the name of the site … The Butte de ? and b) don’t remember reading about it in the Price of Glory. Perhaps I can find something about it on the internet.

Anyway, thank you so much for the two days we spent with you – you certainly deserved the “overpayment”.

With best wishes and many thanks. Also please feel free to use us as a reference if you ever need to.

Hi Richard,

It was lovely to arrive home to your email.  Thank you for making our trip such an interesting one as you say it was very emotional not just about Jonah but about all the men who fought in the war it was so moving.  My mum and dad haven’t stopped talking about the trip and I know my mum feels like she has put something to rest for her family.

So thank you again for inspiring me to start planning our next journey as this really is just the beginning!

Best Wishes

Hi Richard

I just wanted to say a huge thank you for the fascinating insight you gave us into WW1 and for bringing our great grandad, Jonah Instone, to life for us. And it was such a joy to return to Chavasse Farm at the end of the day. You truly made it an unforgettable experience.

Sending my best wishes to you both and once again many thanks!

Richard

I can't thank you enough for your reception and kindness. Should you need a recommendation at any point from my fellow Cdns or cousins to the south, Yanks. Let me know and I will email them. Should you ever get to Ottawa or closer please let me know. What I could show you pales in comparison but there was a major battle not far from our place during the war of 1812. Some skirmishes from the seven years war.

Once again it was a pleasure to meet you and have the opportunity to spend the day.

Best regards

Hi Richard

Thank you for your very kind email and also for attaching the copies of the two maps near Zonnebeke where my father was wounded.  I still cannot get over the fact that you found the place with so little to go on.

I am glad you received the emails with my father's memoires - I have an email copy of the photos separately if there are any particular ones which you would like an email copy of.

Very many thanks again.

Best wishes

Dear Richard

I must add my thanks to those of Brian. After our visit to the museum at Zonnebecke on the Tuesday I confess I was a little depressed at the prospect of 3 days of looking at German helmets.

Then you took over, and everything came to life!

Brian was very touched by the trouble you took to research his father and uncles histories. I am not at all surprised that you are busy enough and find you don’t need to advertise!

So many thanks indeed, thanks to you it has been a trip I will be recounting to many of my friends for a long time.

What else can I say but 44 833?

Best wishes

Hi Richard:

I can't thank you enough for the fantastic tour you did for us. It was definitely a highlight of our trip!  We never thought we would actually find Alexander Mair's memorial, so that was very exciting.  I don't suppose my parents will travel back to Europe again, and visiting Vimy was a dream of theirs, so it was really gratifying to see them enjoy it so much.
I haven't had a chance to look at the attachments you sent me yet.  Thanks for that though.  It is great to have all the info in case another family member wants to check it out.  Maybe the next generation??  I am sure Alexander Mair never would have dreamed his great niece would travel to France to see his name memorialised!!
Many thanks and all the best

Thank you for your email but it is we who should be thanking you for such a wonderful day chock full of great information..... I hope we remember even half of it. Once again thank you very much for a wonderful day, your company and knowledge.

Very pleased to recommend you to all and sundry

Hi Richard & Michelle

Thanks again for making our Somme tour so memorable. Once again, we were overawed by your depth of knowledge, Richard, and your patience in dealing with our questions.

Next year should be even more memorable and we are already looking forward to meeting up with you for our tour with "les femmes".

Good luck with your Ironman triathlon on Sunday.
